Purpose of Data Governance

The framework exists to:

  • Improve the accuracy and reliability of data
  • Keep the College’s data safe and secure
  • Support responsible data sharing and access
  • Establish clear rules and responsibilities for managing data
  • Identify and resolve issues in how data is handled
  • Promote consistent processes and standards across the College

Primary Functions of Data Governance

  • Policy Development: Develop, maintain, and communicate institutional rules and best practices for data use.
  • Define Roles: Clarify who owns, maintains, and makes decisions about institutional data.
  • Establish Accountability: Ensure individuals and units understand and follow their data responsibilities.
  • Compliance: Support adherence to legal, regulatory, accreditation, and policy requirements.
  • Data Quality: Promote accurate and reliable data through standards, training, documentation, and regular checks.
  • Data Security: Protect confidential and sensitive data and support secure access practices.
  • Issue Resolution: Provide a structure for identifying, discussing, and resolving data-related problems.
